Eligibility Criteria for Our Internship Programs

To ensure a meaningful and successful internship experience, New Zealand Internships has established specific eligibility criteria. These criteria are designed to make sure that we would be able to assist you. Please review the requirements on this page to determine your eligibility for our internship program.

First Check

To participate in our internship program, please ensure you meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum age 18;

  • The industry youโ€™d like to do an internship in is directly related to your educational background;

  • Upper intermediate โ€“ advanced English language skills (equivalent to IELTS 5.5);

Passport Or Visa

Before applying for our internship program, it is essential to ensure you have a valid passport or, if necessary, (access to) the appropriate visa. Please make sure you have access to one of the options below:

  • 1

    New Zealand passport

  • 2

    A valid Visa with full work rights in New Zealand.

  • 3

    The possibility to apply for a New Zealand Visa with full work rights.

Start date & lead time

Interns have the flexibility to choose their preferred start date for a customised part-time or full-time internship placement, ranging from 12 to 24 weeks. However, it is important to plan ahead and allow sufficient lead time for the internship process. If you are already in New Zealand, we require a minimum of 4 weeks lead time from the date we receive your finalised profile. We will assist you with setting up this profile. For more information, please visit our “How it Works” page.

Candidates Coming from Overseas

For candidates coming from overseas, we require at least 3 months lead time, especially for those who need to apply for suitable working visas (e.g., Working Holiday Visa). While it is unlikely we can occassionaly assist if you cannot meet the 3-month lead time, feel free to contact us to discuss your situation.

We request a longer lead time for overseas candidates because there is more involved than just securing your internship placement. You will also need to obtain necessary documents such as a valid passport and visa, make travel arrangements, sort out accommodation, and plan for your arrival (Don’t worry, we will assist you with all of this). Therefore, we strongly recommend starting your application process at least 3 months in advance to ensure a smooth and timely start to your internship.
