Intern Duties
We are beginning a new chapter in a long-term research program studying North Island Brown Kiwi. Our work focuses on their breeding behaviours and physiology. We are primarily looking for people to help with our fieldwork, although there is some potential to do lab work and captive work as well, this will depend on the volunteer and timing. Our field site is located on an isolated island in the Hauraki Gulf (near Auckland). The accommodations on the island are relatively basic, however, we usually have the use of a cabin with beds, running water and electricity.
Because kiwi has such a long breeding season (8months+) we will not be on the field the entire time. Trips to the field will range from a couple of weeks to potentially a couple of months with a week or two break in between. When we are not on the island we will be unable to provide you with accommodation, however, you are free to take this time to explore New Zealand.
The work itself will primarily involve locating the birds using radio telemetry (note Kiwi is a shy, nocturnal bird so you rarely see them walking about), nest checks, setting up equipment (mostly cameras) to observe the birds, invertebrate sampling, habitat surveys, and on occasion, assisting colleagues with capturing birds and taking samples. Some of this work will involve working at night and cold conditions.
